Abstract | Jim Egan, a retired UW-Eau Claire faculty member, brought in for the History Harvest several CDs, which contained recordings of broadcasts he did for a radio series entitled Jazz, Blues, and Beyond. These educational recordings on the history of jazz performers from pre-World War I through the 1950s (14:05) were played for students during breaks and exam periods. Mr. Egan also spoke about the live performances in the Eau Claire area, beginning with a series of concerts sponsored by the university and often performed in Davies Center. Two of the performers he particularly remembered were the Preservation Dixieland Band from New Orleans and the New England Ragtime Orchestra (2:40). He also spoke of the Ragtime Festival, which ran for thirteen years and including performers such as a piano student from UW-Eau Claire, as well as a visit from Milt Hinton, an upright bass player from New York City, who documented the Jazz scene in NYC in the 1950s. A particularly famous Jazz-related visitor to Eau Claire that Mr. Egan noted was Count Basie, who performed in downtown Eau Claire. When a reporter from the Blugold newspaper attempted to interview him, she found it difficult due to Basie watching a baseball game on TV the entire time (12:00). |
