Abstract | Neal Sipress talks about his self-taught career as an audio guy and his involvement with a variety of musicians and the recording process of music (00:10). Continues to talk about all of the different jobs he has had in career doing audio. Talks about his love for the mix of heart and science when it comes to music and how he stopped playing piano when he discovered synthesizers (3:00). Mentions that his friends were his main influence when it came to music (4:15). Goes on to talk about his apartment recording studio that was set up in his bedroom. This is where he recorded the first three Drunk Drivers records and he explained the way they used to record music in his apartment (5:35). Sipress then talks about how he thinks that there is an enormous value to the handmade studios that are located in Eau Claire. He believes that the easily accessible studios expose the musical talent that wouldn’t otherwise be heard (8:40). Sipress continues to talk about the increase of studios in Eau Claire and the impact that it has had on the area. He believes that the positive aspect of home studios is having unlimited studio time to record (9:56). The conversation shifts to talk about Sipress’s support for the confluence project and the arts (12:40). He then talks about the Eau Claire music scene and the awareness people have of it and how people consume music (20:18). He goes on to mention his collaborations with people (23:48). Mentions that he came to Eau Claire because of the new talent that is always emerging in the area and how Eau Claire fits in the larger music market (24:57). He then mentions playing in basement venues in Eau Claire and how he used to use computers to create music and the advantages of computer when it comes to editing music, the disadvantages he still faces when it comes to editing/making music, and how music with change when technology continues to advance (33:35). Sipress ends the oral history by talking about the people who had an impact on Eau Claire’s music scene since the 1980s. |
